How to make Tamarind Rice


What is Tamarind Rice?

Tamarind rice, also known as pulihora or puliyogare in South India, is a popular dish made with rice, tamarind paste, and a variety of spices. It is a tangy, flavorful, and slightly sour dish that is typically eaten as a snack or a main course. Tamarind rice is a common dish in South India and is often served during festivals and special occasions. It is usually vegetarian, but sometimes it may include other ingredients like peanuts, cashews, and vegetables like carrots or peas. Tamarind rice can be enjoyed on its own or with other side dishes like papadum or raita.

Here’s a simple recipe to make tamarind rice at home:


What are the Ingredients?

1 cup rice (basmati or any other long-grain rice)

2 tbsp tamarind paste

2 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp cumin seeds

1/4 tsp asafetida (hing)

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp red chili powder

2-3 dried red chilies

10-12 curry leaves

1/4 cup roasted peanuts

Salt to taste


How to cook Tamarind Rice?
  1. Cook the rice in a pot with 2 cups of water until it is fully cooked. Fluff with a fork and keep aside.
  2. In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafetida, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Fry for a minute.
  3. Add the tamarind paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to taste. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Add the cooked rice to the pan and mix well with the tamarind mixture.
  5. Add the roasted peanuts and mix well.
  6. Remove from heat and serve hot.

Your tangy and flavorful tamarind rice is now ready to be enjoyed! You can also garnish it with some fresh coriander leaves and serve it with raita or any other side dish of your choice.
